FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK….. JANUARY 4, 2004
Dear Fellow Parishioners,
It's been more than a week since the recent earthquake struck. Every day that passes brings with it new hope. In my homily on Christmas Eve, I shared a comment that was made by one of our many faithful parishioners on Tuesday, December 23rd , during the aftermath of the destruction of human life as well as material resources caused by the recent earthquake. I was bemoaning the fact that we had lost our beautiful church for our midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. The parishioner gently corrected me. He said, "You still have your church, Father. You just don't have a building."
I can truly attest to the fact that the church is still here. You are the church of Mission San Miguel Parish. In the intervening week and a half since the earthquake hit, so many generous and concerned people have been coming forward asking how they can help. People have been calling by phone, sending mail, sending also e-mail messages offering their condolences, financial help, personal services , etc. We friars and members of the parish staff feel overwhelmed by all the love and support so many people from far and near have been showing us. The true Christmas spirit is alive and well!
As for what the future holds for Mission San Miguel, I cannot honestly tell you at this particular point in time. We must still ride out the normal period for aftershocks. However, I can tell you that every effort will be made to retrofit and restore the mission church, the sacristy, the parish offices' complex, the museum and the gift shop. I do know that some areas will take longer than others to be restored. I plan to set up some emergency meetings with the Parish Building Drive Committee as well as the Mission Restoration Committee in the next two weeks to pursue these important projects. I am reminded of a saying that I've often quoted in past homilies I've given: "We may not know what the future holds, but we do know Who it is who holds the future in His hands." May God bless you for your support! Sincerely yours in Christ,
Rev. Raymond J. Tintle, OFM
