FROM THE PASTORAL ASSOCIATE'S DESK…… Sister Loretta

"Baptism of the Lord"

January 11, 2004

We are going to shift gears!

The focus shifts from the Nativity Scene to the Church baptismal font.  If you are still wondering when is the right time to take down your Christmas Nativity Scene, this is it --- the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord!!  All Christmas decorations, trees and nativity cribs are packaged for another year.

While a prominent and permanent font is desirable, the importance lies not so much in the font itself, but rather in the water that fills the font --- perhaps flowing water.  It should be clear and plentiful, representing a flowing river.

On this day, it is appropriate to use the sprinkling rite instead of the Penitential Rite at the beginning of Mass.  It is also appropriate to use the Renewal of Baptismal Promises in the place of the Nicene Creed.

Yours in Christ,

Sr. Loretta Guevarra, S.A.
Pastoral Associate
