FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK……

FEBRUARY 8, 2004

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

"Tempus fugit!"  That's Latin for "How time flies!"  It seems that the older I get, the faster the years go by!  Wasn't it just a few days ago we were getting ready to celebrate Thanksgiving 2003?  Now we're into February 2004!  And, it's time to get ready for our Annual Bishop's Appeal.

It's time for you and me to pray and reflect on what our pledge will be this year to the Annual Bishop's Appeal in light of our own individual circumstances.  Has your situation changed from what it was a year ago?  With the earthquake of December 22, 2003, our situation definitely has changed at Old Mission San Miguel!  Perhaps you need to consult with someone about this matter.  Now's the time to do it.  Commitment Sunday is February 22, 2004.

I believe that all of us can identify in some way or other with Isaiah, the prophet,  in the first reading for this Fifth Sunday in Ordinary time (see Isaiah 6:3-8) or Peter, the apostle, in today's Gospel (see Luke 5: 1-11) when they express their feelings of helplessness when asked to respond to God's call to take part in His work of saving the world.  In each instance, however, the Lord puts these men at ease by promising to support them in their efforts.

It's a tried and true principle that if we are generous in supporting the Lord's work, He will never be outdone in generosity towards us in return.  He will abundantly supply all our needs.

                                                                    Sincerely yours in Christ,

                                                                    Rev. Raymond Tintle, OFM
                                                                    Pastor
