FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK……
MARCH 14, 2004
Dear Fellow Parishioners,
Not too long ago, I had an experience I'd like to share with you. I had a bulb in one of my tail-lights on my car burn out. I had been meaning to get it fixed but hadn't gotten around to it. I was stopped by the Highway Patrol. I thought for sure I'd get a ticket and a stiff fine. The patrolman was gracious, however. He asked me how long the light had been out. I told him it was quite some time ago and that I had been meaning to get around to having it fixed but just hadn't found the time. He explained how dangerous it is not to have tail-lights all in working order. Then he gave me a form to take to my car dealer. He told me to have the work inspected by a police officer who could then sign it and put it in the mail and I wouldn't have to appear in traffic court. He made me promise I would get it done quickly. I was very happy that he took me at my word and let me go. I felt that I had been given another chance.
When I was growing up at home, a common refrain often repeated in our house was: "Give me another chance!" This would usually occur when one of us was about to get a whipping.
It's a great feeling to be given another chance. In school, we're happy when a teacher allows us to take a "make-up" test. Some of us are comforted to know we can take a driver's test over again after we fail one. In court, it's considered a victory when a defendant is sentenced to "probation" which is essentially being given another chance.
Today's Gospel parable reminds us that our God is the God of second chances. (See Luke 13: 1-9) Lent is a time for second chances, as well. It begins by admitting that we have made mistakes; that we have lost our way; that we have wandered from the path God plotted for us. Needing a second chance can be a humbling experience. Not taking advantage of one when it is offered is an even greater mistake!
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Fr. Ray Tintle, OFM Pastor
