Fun Day in San Miguel

Mission San  Miguel, San Miguel, CA. . Those of you that did not attend San Miguel Sagebrush Days Saturday April 28th missed a rollicking day of fun in San Miguel.

The day was kicked off by a really lively and fun parade, sponsored by the San Miguel Lions Club and organized by originator Alan Belden, at 10a.m.  A lot of hard work went into all the participants’ entries. Over 40 in all.

From there, the festivities moved over to the Mission San Miguel, sponsored by the Festival Committee headed up by Pat Marchand and Monica Cisneros.  There, things really took off!  Energy was felt everywhere!

“The Wind River Band” and Jay Barber entertained the folks while those present listened, talked, enjoyed good treats, and shared the community spirit felt by all.  Next came the energized  ”Xiuhcoati, Aztec Dancers” and the lively “Wasco Thomas Jefferson Intermediate School Band”.

There were prizes too!  Eight years old Anita Garcia won the “Best Costume” award.  Her grandmother, Sandy Garcia had just the night before sewn the lovely “Josephine American Spanish Girl” costume.  Anita is a student at Pleasant Valley Elementary School. She plans to save the $100.00 check for college.

Then came the big raffle drawing for the beautifully hand carved “Wildhorse Bench” by local artist Leonard Potter.  Mr. and Mrs. Ed Salas of Atascadero were the lucky winners.  There were other prizes too.  Many young people were winners of the many games and the Treasure Hunt.

Those that felt like meandering could watch while many young people took a “crack” at getting some hands on early mission life activities.  Thanks go to Dr. Judy Deitch, and her daughter, Jessi, who gave instructions and demonstrated spinning and weaving techniques.  Nick Canigiula helped the young people learn mission-era woodworking techniques; --- especially those used in building the Mission, 204 years ago.

It was a really full day!  Thanks go to many people; especially the San Miguel Community for helping in many ways. They and others all came together to give a fun-filled day that could be appreciated not only by the residents of San Miguel, but the community-at-large of the greater Central Coast.
