Fiesta
2004! –More Important Than Ever!
Mission San
Miguel, San Miguel, CA. . –As most of you know,
Mission San Miguel suffered a major earthquake on December 22, 2003. The 6.5
magnitude San Simeon quake caused extensive damage. After repairs funded by
donations, the Mission’s Museum and Gift Shop are now reopened to the public.
However, the Mission Church -- “the jewel of the California Missions” must
remain closed until the Mission Foundation can afford to repair it.
This year, more than ever, the Mission---
Northern San Luis Obispo County’s oldest landmark-- needs your support at a
delicious and fun-filled Fiesta old-style Barbecue, on Sunday, September 19th,
2004 (the third Sunday in September) Noon until 4 P.M. By attending this
event, you can help the Preservation Fund repair and preserve the historic
Mission, and enjoy a good meal and music at the same time.
Tickets - Adults: $8, Children: $5.
All proceeds benefit the Mission Preservation Fund.
In addition to the
meal, there will also be all-day music, raffles and games for everyone. The
Fiesta meal will be preceded by a Special 11A.M. Outdoor Fiesta Mass
on the Mission grounds ( reminiscent of the first Fiesta Mass held outdoors
in 1797). New World Baroque Orchestra’s Director John Warren is directing
and performing the Fiesta Mass music which will include excerpts from the
beautiful “La Misa en Sol (“ Mass in G”) written by Fray Juan Bautista Sancho,
O.F.M., who served at both Mission San Antonio de Padua and Mission San Miguel
Arcangel from 1804-1830. This will be
the first celebration of this Mass performed during an actual service since the
early 1800’s.
With proceeds from this year’s Fiesta, the
Mission plans one more step in the preservation process: to reopen the front
arcade leading to the Mission Church.
This will allow visitors once again to enjoy the cactus garden and
fountain, as well as provide a more convenient exit from the Museum and Gift
Shop.
This is a Fiesta that you don’t want to miss!
–In addition to the pleasure of a good meal, good company and a fun afternoon,
you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that you’ve helped out a Mission that’s
struggling to preserve itself for future generations to come.
Tickets and more information are available at the Mission San Miguel Gift Shop (805) 467- 3256, or call Monica Cisneros (805) 467- 3376.
