Mission San Miguel to Become a National Historic Landmark
 | | | | Mission San Miguel, San Miguel, CA. . – Monday, October 25th, Mission San Miguel was approved by the National Park Service Committee for Landmark designation. The matter will now go to the full National Parks Board in Washington DC for final approval, on January 13th 2006, though this step is just a formality.
Mission San Miguel is now considered a National Landmark.
Due to damage incurred during the Dec. 23rd, 2003 earthquake, Mission San Miguel is currently closed to the public, but the restoration process has already begun. The first stage, reopening of the Museum complex, will be completed late this Fall.
Restoration Project Manager John Fowler said, “we couldn't be more pleased that the National Park Service has acknowledged that Mission San Miguel is not only a State Treasure but a National Treasure as well. This will clearly give our fundraising efforts a boost by opening doors to donors on a much larger scale who only get involved with National Landmark status projects. We are continually amazed at the importance and the number of friends this Mission has, not only on a local level, but also on a National level. We've always felt this Mission was an important part of California History and now this approval confirms that and a whole lot more.”
