Mission San Miguel Unanimously Approved as National Historic Landmark
Good news! Mission San Miguel was unanimously approved as a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Services National Historic Landmark Program.
Of the seven missions currently listed as National Historic Landmarks, only Mission San Miguel, the best preserved of all the missions, remains essentially unchanged since colonial times.
Mission San Miguel is presently undergoing restoration to repair extensive damage caused by the San Simeon earthquake of December 22, 2003. Parts of the Mission have recently been re-opened to the public, but the old church remains closed for now.
Restoration Project Manager John Fowler said: “the on-going effort to restore Mission San Miguel is a daunting challenge and there is still much to do. Achieving National Historic Landmark recognition signifies the importance of this work. We are grateful the Nation has recognized the historic treasure we have in our midst and we are more determined than ever to carry on.”
