The oven in the corner of the kitchen has no chimney, just a small hole in the back. A wood fire was built inside the oven making the bricks very hot. After the fire burned out, the ashes would be cleaned out and the heat from the hot bricks would bake breads and meats. When the fire was burning there would be a lot of smoke and heat rising to the ceiling. Meat would hang from the rafters and would then be preserved by the smoke.
